Ambassador Michel Vandepoorter
Ambassador Michel Vandepoorter is a career diplomat. Born in Lille on December 10th 1949, he graduated from the Institut d’Etudes politiques in Paris and holds a law degree.
Having entered the Foreign Service in 1973, Michel Vandepoorter served at the Legal Department of the Quai d’Orsay (the French ministry of Foreign affairs) before being posted at French embassies in Brussels (from 1974 to 1977), Tunis (from 1977 to 1981) and Abidjan (from 1981 to1984).
Later, after serving for three years in Paris, Michel Vandepoorter was appointed in 1987 Counsellor at the the French embassy in Cameroon and to the French delegation to the OSCE in Vienna in 1990. He then served as Assistant director at the United Nations and international organisations directorate in Paris before being appointed Deputy Head of mission at the French embassy in Athens in 1997.
In 2000, Michel Vandepoorter was Ambassador to Nicaragua and then Head of francophone affaires in Paris. In 2008, he was appointed as Ambassador to Mauritania.
He is married to Marie Vandepoorter. The couple have two children.
