Artist-in-Residence program: Cité internationale des Arts, Paris - Call for applications [fr]
The Institut français is launching the 2018 call for applications for its residency program at the Cité internationale des arts / Paris.
The program is aimed at foreign artists from all around the world who wish to pursue a research project in Paris during a minimum period of three consecutive months, and that are supported by one or more cultural partners.
These partners associated with the artist may be institutions of the French cultural network abroad (Institut français, Cultural Services of the French Embassies, and Alliance française) and / or French or foreign cultural structures (art centers, associations, multidisciplinary laboratories, galleries, museums, theaters, production centers for dance and circus, concert halls, festivals abroad, etc.).
What are the modalities of the residency ?
The Institut français in Paris provides artists with a studio-apartment at the Cité internationale des arts.
The partner associated with the artist, in France or abroad, finances the artist’s travel and / or living expenses and submits the artist’s application.
This program is aimed at artists in every artistic discipline:
Architecture/landscape/urbanism, street arts/circus/puppets, digital arts, visual arts, comics, cinema/movies/video, curating projects, dance/performances, design, literature, youth book, fine arts and crafts, modern music and jazz, classical and contemporary music, contemporary art performances, photography, theatre, musics for films and video games.
Applications submitted directly by artists will be unacceptable. They must be deposited by the associated partners on the following platform:
IFprog (http://ifprog.institutfrancais.com/en/login). The Institut français recommends that associated partners liaise with Fanny Rolland (email@example.com) from the Residency Division, prior to submitting applications, as to build the residency project together.
Dead line to apply: September 29th 2017 end of day
Selection: mid-November 2017
The associated partner who submits the application must:
commit in writing to cover the travel and / or subsistence expenses of the artist and can also specify the financial commitment of other partners involved in the project;
provide a reasoned opinion on the reasons for its support of the application of the artist
explicitly indicate how it intends to showcase the work of the laureate during or following the residency.
Have started their professional life;

Provide proof of previous artistic work;
Be independent to organize their residency on their own once in Paris
Be available (without any professional obligations) during the residency
There is no age limit.
In addition to the evaluation of the applicant’s professional accomplishments, a special attention will be given to the project quality, the necessity to stay in Paris during the residency, the candidate’s French and English proficiency, the process of work the candidate has elaborated for his residency in Paris and the capacity to develop collaborations with contacts the candidate has established in France:
art centers, cultural structures, artists, curators, critics, researchers, etc. These actors have an advisory role, supporting the artist in his/her networking during and after residency.
All applications will be examined by an advisory committee chaired by the General Director of the Institut français, composed of experts from the Institut français and representatives of the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs, of the Ministry of Culture, of the French foreign cultural network, of the National Center for visual arts, of the Cité internationale des arts.
The advisory committee can refuse any project without having to justify their decision. Their decision is irrevocable.
The Institut français will cover the studio-apartment rental, approximately 40m2, at the Cité internationale des arts located 18, rue de l’Hôtel de Ville, 75004, Paris in the district of Le Marais, in the Center of Paris.
The associated partner will make sure that the laureate has sufficient resources for his/her stay. We therefore recommend that the artist be granted a living allowance of 1000 euros per month (minimum) and / or a return ticket. The associated partner must ensure that the laureate has an insurance covering repatriation, hospitalization, medical expenses and civil liability. It must also ensure that the laureate has a visa enabling him/her to stay in France during the period of his/her residency. No production allowance will be paid by the Institut français or the Cité Internationale des Arts.
The duration of the residency is 3 or 6 months according to the following timetable for 2018 (arrivals or departures in the middle of a month are NOT permitted):
From January 9th to April 4th 2018 (preference for literature, youth book, comics, design, fine arts and craft work)
