Lecture by Dr Charles Xuereb - Thursday 23rd April
The Alliance française de Malte Méditerranée invites you to a lecture by Dr Charles Xuereb : “What really happened when Bonaparte came to Malta?”
In 1798 General Bonaparte stopped with his Army of the Orient at Malta, planning to liberate the Island from the outdated despotic rule of the Order of St John. Jacobins including Maltese intellectuals and French knights had been plotting these events for many months. Resistance was weak and once a republican government was set up, Malta became a new ’democracy’. However, in just over 80 days an insurrection by the countryside blockaded the central government and the small French garrison behind the city bastions. In less than 2 years Malta was practically a British protectorate. What really did happen? Dr Charles Xuereb attempts many answers. This lecture is based on his latest findings following the publication of his latest book and completion of his PhD.
Dr Xuereb’s latest book “France in the Maltese Collective Memory” will be available for sale at a discounted price. This is also your chance to get your signed copy of the book.
••The public lecture will start at 18.00 at the Alliance française of Malte méditerranée. Casa Sir Luigi Preziosi, 108 St.Thomas Street, Floriana.
