MARITIME SAFETY AND SECURITY EXPERT LECTURES AT IMLI

Dr. Philippe Boisson, President of the French Maritime Law Association and Member of the French Superior Council of Merchant Marine (Conseil Supérieur de la Marine Marchande) visited the International Maritime Law Institute between the 27th and the 30th of January, 2014. On that occasion, he gave several lectures on Maritime Safety and Security.

The Director, staff and students of the IMLI class of 2013/2014 had the pleasure of welcoming Dr. Philippe Boisson, who visited the Institute between the 27th and the 30th of January, 2014. As a visiting professor of the Institute, this years’ visit marks the 20th consecutive visit by Dr Boisson to the Institute to deliver his famous lectures on Maritime Safety and Security. He delivered a three part lecture during his stay.

In his lecturers, Dr Boisson first gave an introductory lecture on maritime safety and security, defining it to be the protection of people, property and the marine environment and then continued with subsequent lectures, delving into depth in the areas covered by maritime safety. These included the regulatory process in maritime safety, ship safety construction and equipment and cargo safety. In his fifth lecture, he dealt with the human element of safety and operational safety, followed by the control of ship safety. In his final lecture, Dr Philippe Boisson covered the role of classification societies in ship safety.

Dr Philippe Boisson is a Titulary Member of the CMI (Comité Maritime International) and also a Maritime Arbitrator of the Chambre Arbitrale Maritime of Paris (CAMP). He lectures at the Faculty of Law, Lille University and is President of the French Maritime Law Association.

Dr Boisson is a Member of the French Superior Council of Merchant Marine (Conseil Supérieur de la Marine Marchande).
In 1981, he joined Bureau Veritas which is one of the largest classification and certification societies worldwide. Presently, Dr Philippe Boisson has dutifully worked himself to the position of Communication Director and Legal Advisor for its Marine and Offshore Division.

Dr Boisson is a proud member of the Institute governing board.
His hands-on and working knowledge in the field of maritime safety and security which he was adequately able to transmit to the students, made them very much appreciative of the lectures.
