Nobel Prize in Literature for French author Patrick Modiano [fr]

The Nobel Prize in Literature was awarded to French author Patrick Modiano on 9 October, 2014

Mr. Modiano is the fifteenth French author to receive this distinction (*)
The Swedish Academy explained that it had given the Nobel Prize to Patrick Modiano "for the art of memory with which he has evoked the most ungraspable human destinies and uncovered the life-world of the German occupation of France during World War II”.
The French President of the Republic, François Hollande congratulated the writer for "his considerable work being able to explore the intricacies of memory and the complexity of identity”.
Following the announcement of the Swedish Academy’s choice, Patrick Modiano said: "I would like to know how they came to this decision as I can remember my childhood memories, …including Camus, I must have been 12 years old… and then the others (...) it all seems a bit unreal to be confronted with people I admired.”
In any case, the motives of the Swedish Academy remain faithful to the spirit expressed by its founder Alfred Nobel: "The Nobel Prize in Literature is awarded to a writer who has rendered great service to humanity through a piece of literary work (...) having demonstrated a powerful ideal"(**)
