Terrorist attack in Barcelona - Statement by Jean-Yves Le Drian
I learned with deep emotion the toll of the attack committed in Barcelona, for which Daesh has claimed responsibility. I condemn this attack in the firmest manner.
Twenty-six French citizens were injured, at least eleven of whom seriously. My thoughts go out to these citizens and to their families, to whom I extend my total sympathy at this painful time.
I will be travelling to Barcelona within the day to visit the French victims of this cowardly act and to assure the Spanish people and authorities of France’s support.
As soon as the attack was announced, I ordered the opening of a crisis unit at the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs in order to take stock of the safety of our citizens in Barcelona and to respond to their friends and family. Our personnel have worked through the night and have so far received more than 3,200 calls. The unit remains open and continues to answer calls.
In Barcelona, our Consulate-General, in liaison with the Spanish authorities, is doing everything possible to provide support to the French citizens affected by this attack. In order to respond to the emergency, I have asked for health professionals to be sent to Barcelona. The first will arrive today to provide psychological support and to assist the families of the victims. Further reinforcements are planned.
The safety of our citizens abroad is an absolute priority to which the staff of the Ministry and its diplomatic and consular network are committed on a daily basis. I would like to thank all those who responded immediately and with devotion in Barcelona, Madrid and Paris to assist the victims and their friends and family.
